NAPIS® 'Step-by-Step' for Microorganism Source Material Data-Entry
(*REQUIRED STEPS are Steps 1 and 2. All others are optional.)
*Step 1. Open an Existing Microorganism Source Material Record:
From the NAPIS main menu select Collection | Microorganisms | Source Material Data to open the Specify Source ID dialog. Type in the Source ID you would like to open, or use the '*' or '%' wildcard characters to retrieve all Microorganism Source Material Records. You can also open a Microorganism Source Material Record by navigating from a Site form or a Collection/Isolate form by clicking the 'Source' button on the tool-bar.
*Step 2. Enter a New Microorganism Source Material Record:
From the NAPIS main menu select Collection | Microorganisms | Source Material Data to open the Specify Source ID dialog and click the 'New' button, or if you are already on an open Microorganism Source Material Record select Record | New Record from the menu-bar. This will open the Create New Source dialog, where you must enter a unique Source ID; number-type preferences are defined in Utilities Setup . Select a Site Number for the Source to link to from the pull-down list. Click to set the Number of Replicate Samples collected (default = 1) using the arrows or by entering a value in the field.
If you enter a new record incorrectly, delete it by clicking the 'undo' button on the toolbar, or by selecting Record | Delete Record from the menu-bar.
Step 3. Define the Microorganism Source Material Type:
Select a radio-button choice in the 'Source Type' section on the left side of the form; making a choice changes the appearance of the upper right section of the Source Material Record. There are four possible choices:

Step 4. Enter Data in the Upper Right Section:
The appearance of this section changes based on the Source Type selected in Step 3. Enter and select values as available.
Step 5. Enter the Container:
Use the pull-down list to pick a value to describe the container the source material sample is in. The available values for this list are customizable in the Utilities Lookup editor (select the N_CONTAIN table).
Step 6. Enter the Status:
Use the pull-down list to pick a value that describes the status of the source material sample, e.g. frozen or dry. The available values for this list are customizable in the Utilities Lookup editor (select the N_STATUS table).
Step 7. Enter the Storage:
Click in the field and enter the address for storage of the source material sample.
Step 8. Enter the MicroSource:
Click the 'Set' button to the right of the MicroSource field to open the Select Microorganism Source Type dialog. Select values from the list boxes for each category and click 'OK'. The available values for these list boxes are customizable in the Utilities Lookup editor (select the M_METHOD, M_FOME, and M_QUALITY tables).
Step 9. Enter General Notes:
This notes field is for recording knowledge about the Microorganism Source Material. It is not searchable in the database, but may be used in reporting.
