INSTALLATION
The program installation is handled with an InstallShield, a step-by-step wizard that will guide you through the installation of the NAPIS Lite program. Read each of the screens carefully and follow the instructions. The setup wizard can be launched by double-clicking on the file 'setup.exe'. If you downloaded NAPIS Lite from the Internet, this file is located in the zip file. If you are installing from a CD-ROM, the 'setup.exe' file is located in the root directory of the CD-ROM. All of the NAPIS Lite components will be copied to your computer and properly registered, icons created, and the NAPIS file system installed with the database and NAPIS system files.
The NAPIS Lite file system includes:
| Directory | Sub-Directory | Description |
| \Napis Lite | install directory, program files | |
| \Data | data tables | |
| \EthnoDocs | shared ethnobotanical documents | |
| \GIS | shared GIS map files | |
| \Inventory | user-saved inventory tables | |
| \Lookup | shared lookup tables | |
| \Photos | shared photo image files | |
| \Submit | user-saved submit tables | |
| \System | system preferences | |
| \Utilities | utility programs | |
| \Work Order | user-saved work order tables |
Before You Begin
If you already have NAPIS Lite installed, you will have to perform some additional steps before you can successfully install a new or updated version. First, you should backup your existing data or else the setup wizard will overwrite it. You will also need to uninstall any previous version of NAPIS Lite.
Make a Backup of Your Data- Start Windows file explorer and navigate to the location where your NAPIS Lite program is installed. This is generally 'c:\Program Files\Napis Lite'.
- In the NAPIS Lite directory, find the 'Data' file. This file contains your active data.
- Click once on the 'Data' file to select it.
- Select Edit | Copy from the Windows file explorer menu to copy the directory.
- Navigate to the directory where you want to store your backup data.
- Select Edit | Paste from the Windows file explorer menu to paste your data.
- Windows XP users can click the 'Start' button on the Windows XP desktop and select Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs. Non-XP users can access the same function from the 'Start' button by clicking on Settings | Control Panel.
- Scroll through the list of installed programs until you find NAPIS Lite.
- Click on NAPIS Lite to select it.
- Click on the 'Remove' button to launch the uninstall wizard.
- Follow the steps in the uninstall wizard.
NAPIS Lite Installation Checklist
If you are not using Windows XP, you will need to use a commonly available shareware decompression utility called WinZip. (If you are using Windows XP and WinZip is installed on your machine the WinZip extraction tool will override the Windows XP extraction tool.)
If you are using Windows XP without WinZip- Open Windows file explorer and navigate to the directory where you downloaded the files.
- Double-click on the file 'Napis_Lite_2.0.6_full.zip'.
- Double-click on the file 'Setup.exe' and the setup wizard will launch.
- Open Windows file explorer and navigate to the location where you downloaded the files.
- Double-click on the file 'Napis_Lite_2.0.6_full.zip'. If WinZip is installed correctly it will open up the file. If you are having problems with WinZip, check their Frequently Asked Questions page at www.winzip.com/xsupport.htm.
- Click the 'Extract' button and extract the files to a desired directory, as noted in the 'Extract To' text box. Remember this location, as you will need to find it again to start the setup wizard.
- Close WinZip.
- Open Windows file explorer and navigate to the directory where you extracted the files.
- Double-click on the file 'Setup.exe' and the setup wizard will launch.
- Read the welcome screen and click 'Next'.
- Carefully read the license agreement. If you agree with the terms of this agreement click 'Next'. If you do not, click 'No' to exit the wizard. You will not be able to install the program if you do not agree to the terms of the agreement.
- Enter your name and company information and click 'Next' (no serial number is required).
- Select the installation directory for NAPIS Lite. The default is 'c:\Program Files\NAPIS Lite'. Use the default location and click 'Next'.
- Click 'Next' to allow the wizard to create a NAPIS Lite program group.
- Click 'Next' to begin the installation process.
- Click 'Finish' to end the installation process and reboot your computer.
Copy in Sample Data
To use NAPIS Lite sample data you need to rename the active dataset (the one in the 'Data' directory) so it becomes inactive, and rename your sample dataset ('Data_Sample') to 'Data' so that it becomes active. To experiment with your sample data and not lose the data that already resides in the data directory you will extract the data files from the 'Napis_Lite_data_demo.zip' file to a directory called 'Data_Sample' in the NAPIS Lite install directory.
WinZip Users- Open Windows file explorer and navigate to the directory where you downloaded the files.
- Double-click on the file 'Napis_Lite_data_demo.zip' to launch WinZip.
- Click the 'Extract' button.
- Before extracting the files, make sure the 'Extract To' text box has the correct path listed. For example, if you installed NAPIS Lite in the 'c:\Program Files\NAPIS Lite' directory, the text box should say 'c:\Program Files\NAPIS Lite\Sample_Data'.
- Click 'Extract'. WinZip will automatically make the 'Sample_Data' directory if it does not exist.
- You should now have a directory called 'Sample_Data' in your NAPIS Lite install directory.
- Open Windows file explorer and navigate to the 'NAPIS Lite' directory.
- If you installed the sample data correctly you will have a 'Data' directory and a 'Sample_Data' directory.
- Click once to select the 'Data' directory.
- Select File | Rename from the Windows file explorer menu.
- Type 'Data_Original' to rename the directory and make the original data inactive.
- Click once on the 'Data_Sample' directory to select it.
- Select File | Rename from the Windows file explorer menu.
- Type 'Data' to rename the directory and make it the active data directory.
- To restore your original data simply reverse the procedure.
- Every time you change the name of the 'Data' directory you must synchronize the NAPIS Map data points; see the discussion on this for more information.
